If you’re looking to ramp up your privacy online, then you should know how to hide your presence on major social media platforms – especially Facebook. Here’s now.

The world is smaller now. The internet has made sure of that. Social media platforms can be used to connect with friends and family around the world, but they can also be used to look up anyone else in the world and see highly personal information and media about them.

Employers often look up prospective employees on Facebook to get a closer look at what sort of character they are. People often fail to set up the proper privacy settings to avoid this. Even if you’ve set up appropriate privacy settings, someone can still find your profile to get an idea of what you look like, when your birthday is, and more.

If you’ve applied for a job and your potential employer is going through every profile to narrow down their candidates based on what they look like, then you have two choices: First, make a damn appealing profile, and second, remove your profile from the search function.

How to hide yourself on Facebook search

If you want to hide your profile on Facebook search, then fear not – it’s not difficult to do so. Follow these simple instructions to get it done.

  1. Log in to your Facebook account.
  2. Click the Account tab and go to Settings.
  3. Go to Privacy and look at the How people can find and contact you
  4. Select No to the option to have your profile linked to search engines.
  5. Select Friends Only for who can find your profile via your email address and your phone number.

Now people won’t be able to find your Facebook profile on Google or any other search engine. They also can’t search for your profile with your email or phone number.

Thing is, people can still search you by name – but depending on how rare or common your name is, people might struggle to verify you in this way. With regard to employers, they wouldn’t be likely to know which profile is yours because they’d have no way of verifying your profile.

How to make your profile even more private

To make your profile even less recognizable, you can also follow some more steps. Random strangers can always see what you’ve commented on and they can check out your profile. Maybe they’re friends of friends, or maybe you don’t know them at all.

FUTURE POSTS: You can choose to restrict who can see any posts that you make in the future by going to Settings > Privacy > Who can see your future posts? From here, you can choose to set your posts’ audience to everyone, friends, or friends, with the exception of certain people.

PAST POSTS: You can also choose to hide all of your previous posts from the public or specific people in the same way as you can your future posts. This means that you can restrict everyone who isn’t your friend from being able to see anything you’ve posted.

PERSONAL INFO: Go on to your Facebook profile and choose the About tab. From here, you can click the little padlock icon next to information like your birthday, gender, and more. You can choose to hide this from you’re the public, or even from your friends.

HIDE FRIENDS: You can also hide your friends list from other people. They’ll be able to see if you have mutual friends, but they won’t be able to see you whole friends list. This doesn’t just help you to maintain your own privacy, but it also helps you protect everyone else’s.

How to deactivate your Facebook account

The ultimate way to protect your privacy from Facebook is to deactivate or delete your account. We always recommend that you try deactivating your Facebook account if you’re going to get rid of it, just so that you always have the option to reopen it just as it was before, without losing any of your profile data, comments, photos, or anything else.

  1. Go to
  2. Choose General.
  3. Select Manage your account.
  4. Press Deactivate.

You’ll be presented with a list of instructions on how to proceed. This is the best way to protect your privacy on social media.
