Oppo Reno 10x Zoom – Best Phone from the Chinese Company
The Chinese smartphone company Oppo has released what is now their most accomplished smartphone in their arsenal. This is our review of the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom.
There are many incredible smartphones coming out of China at the moment, with companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo leading the charge. These companies were previously known for producing budget smartphones with decent specs – and while that is still the case, there is now another layer emerging on top of that. The Chinese companies are now building smartphones that not only rival everything else in the top-end of the market, but at times even dominate it.
Oppo have been making some blistering smartphones in the Reno range and they’ve been selling them for a cheaper price than the Korean and American competition. The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is the latest and most accomplished handset that Oppo have released thus far. The phone is a masterpiece of modern smartphone innovation.
As the name suggests, the phone supports 10x optical zoom, which is being marketed as a defining feature of the device. But that’s not the only thing that this device has going for it. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom and come to a conclusion about whether you should consider buying it or not.
Oppo Reno 10x Zoom design
The design of the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is unmatched outside of China. One of the most immediate stand-out features of the smartphone is the utter lack of notch on the 6.6-inch display. The phone makes use of a clever pop-up selfie camera, which means that there is no need for a camera on the front of the phone, and there isn’t anything else clogging up the screen, either.
This means that you have undisturbed display to watch Netflix and YouTube videos on. It’s a very rare thing to see, although it has also been used on the OnePlus 7 Pro. For the most part, phones in the West haven’t come around to embracing the complete replacement of the front facing camera with a pop-up cam. It’s unique and makes the phone quite something to look at. It also means that you might occasionally end up holding the phone upside down by accident.
That being said, the display doesn’t take up the whole front of the phone – it’s around 93%. This is because of the bezels on the top and bottom of the device. The one on the bottom is slightly thicker than the one on the top. It does give away the impression that this is not a fully premium device.
The display is an AMOLED with 387 pixels per inch, which is very strong and provides an incredible picture when viewing photos, videos, and generally using the device.
The back of the device feels premium, and the camera setup, which isn’t raised out of the device at all, only adds to the feel.
The camera and zoom
Given the name of the phone, it’s pretty obvious that the camera is a big selling point. So just how good is the camera setup on the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom? First of all, let’s take a look at the megapixel punch that the camera is rocking.
The main lens is a powerful 48MP camera – the top of the mountain with regards to smartphone cameras and a common addition to Chinese smartphones at the moment. This is supported by an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens and a 13MP periscope lens that allows you to zoom in with more quality.
The actual zoom function isn’t completely what it’s led up to be. It’s not actually a 10x optical zoom, it’s a 5x optical zoom, and a 60x digital zoom. This is even better than pretty much every other phone on the market right now. A 60x digital zoom is huge, and even a 5x optical lens is much more than you get with most smartphone cameras.
Still, the smartphone’s camera isn’t everything that it claims to be – given that it does suggest explicitly that it has a 10x optical zoom. Still, photos taken by the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom are of a high quality and the camera works well in varying light conditions.
What’s on the inside?
The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is powered by the formidable Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and has 6 or 8GB of RAM to back it up. This means that the smartphone is a real workhorse and can handle pretty much anything that you throw at it.
The phone works well when gaming – there isn’t any lag when you play draining games, which is certainly helped by the chipset at the phone’s heart. The phone also works well when watching movies and other media.
The ColorOS UI that Oppo phones use is actually a pretty nice setup and looks better than that used by Huawei and Xiaomi phones, and it has enough room for customization which means that you can tailor it to your own needs to some degree.
The phone has decent internal storage as well, which is handy even though most music and video is now stored in the cloud. One of the main things to take away from the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is that it is a formidable force with regards to gaming.
Price, availability, and verdict
The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is a formidable device. The cost isn’t too high – certainly upper mid-range and coming in at £699. Currently, you can’t get the phone in the US unless you have it imported. This will mean that you won’t get warranty on the device if you’re buying it in the US.
You can get the phone in the UK, Europe, Australia, and much of Asia. It’s a decent upper mid-range smartphone that can handle everyday tasks and gaming. Don’t worry about any limitations on apps and software, either. The phone isn’t like Huawei – you can get access to all Google services and Android updates.
Overall, this is a stunning phone for the price and certainly worth consideration if you’re looking for a new smartphone but don’t want to completely break the bank.
