Sirius XM Radio – Keeping Satellite Radio Out of the Bin

07/17/2019     Author: Billy Gray

While satellite radio is becoming less prominent – and in many countries, fading out completely – Sirius XM Radio is keeping it afloat across the US and beyond.

When you hear the term ‘music streaming,’ what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For many – particularly those living outside the US – it’s Spotify. For many others it’s Apple Music, or YouTube, or Pandora. But for those living in the US, the most popular music streaming service is Sirius XM Radio.

The service, which operates via satellite radio, reaches more than 100 million people. For many people, it’s the go-to spot to hear all the latest and greatest music, comedy, news, and commentary. All this is commercial free, so you can listen to tons of unique radio stations without having to listen to those pesky ads.

What’s the catch, then? Surely all this can’t be free? No. It isn’t free. It costs $10.99 / month for a full subscription to Sirius XM Radio. This allows you access to more than 160 radio stations without any ads.

There’s just one more catch: if you’re not in the US, then you can’t tune in (unless you use a VPN…).

What is Sirius XM Radio?

After XM Satellite Radio merged with Sirius Satellite Radio in 2008, Sirius XM Radio was born. The deal was originally criticized for the fact that the new company would dominate the market. They defended their actions by pointing out that this was the only way that satellite radio could possibly survive.

TONS OF CHANNELS: With Sirius XM Radio, you can choose from a massive number of radio stations spanning across all different genres, including different decades, comedy, news, sports, and more.

AD FREE MUSIC: Because you’re paying for your subscription each month, there’s no reason for you to listen to someone trying to sell you car insurance every six minutes. Enjoy your music or commentary without any interruptions.

LISTEN ANYWHERE: It doesn’t matter if you’re in your car or on the subway, you can tune in to your favorite channels on Sirius XM Radio wherever you are. It comes pre-installed in most American cars and can be listened to online through your phone, computer, or whatever else you’re using.

SPORTS AND NEWS: Sirius XM Radio isn’t just limited to music – you can also catch up on the news and the latest sports fixtures live. Don’t miss out on anything!

SIRUS XM RADIO APP: For maximum convenience, you can download the Sirius XM Radio app from the Google Play Store or the App Store, depending on which OS you’re using. This is the best way to enjoy Sirius XM Radio – you can find all the channels conveniently arranged according to their genre and the interface is designed for maximum ease-of-use.

Listen to Sirius XM Radio Online

While you can listen to Sirius XM Radio in your car or through the app on your phone, you can also tune in to the online version. The online interface has been designed to appear somewhat similar to the app, but with more room for extra detail.

With five satellites orbiting the earth, you can be sure that your session will be uninterrupted.

Controversies of Sirius XM Radio

Of course, nothing gets this big without raising some eyebrows and Sirius XM Radio has certainly done just that. The service was forced to pay out a $3.8 million settlement to 45 states after it was found that they were using unfair practices with their renewal services. Basically, it’s pretty hard to cancel the service and they were taking money from people who had said they no longer wish to use it.

This caused a lot of people to post negative reviews about the company. If you search Sirius XM Radio on Google, you’ll see that there are many dissatisfied users complaining about this.

One more area of controversy was the merger between Sirius and XM Satellite Radio in 2008. Many people criticized the Bush administration for allowing the deal to go through, which ultimately created a monopoly in the industry that no one else can possibly hope to compete with.

They companies defended their merger by saying that it was the only way that satellite radio could survive. With companies like Spotify and Apple leading the way in music streaming around the world, and YouTube increasingly moving in to this field as well, they might have been right about this.

Final note

It will be interesting to see how long Sirius XM Radio survives in the new digital era. While millions of people use it, the music streaming market is growing increasingly competitive and there are now plenty of prominent alternatives to choose from.

That being said, there’s nothing quite like tuning in to the radio. If you’re living in the US and looking for some talk and tunes, then this isn’t a bad way to go.

If you don’t live in the US, but you still want to enjoy Sirius XM Radio, then download a VPN to listen to it wherever you are in the world. You can find out more about VPNs in our other posts. Enjoy.
