Super Mario Maker 2 Review: Should You Buy it?
Right now, Super Mario Maker 2 is the most popular game in Nintendo Switch. The game has just been released. Still, it has become a huge deal in a matter of time. But does it live up to the hype? Should you get this game?
To find out, keep reading our detailed review of Super Mario Maker 2. And, here we go…
Nintendo has taken a lot of inspiration from this game’s predecessor. And, we can tell you that, they have made it better in every way possible. There are a lot of new features added in the game. As well as, you will find myriad of game modes to try on. One is entertaining than the other. Lets’ elaborate…
- The Story Mode:
If you are not into creating new levels yourself, the story mode is there for you. In this mode, you can play the pre-created levels by the developers of Nintendo. The story mode gets started with a mess up from the ‘Undo Dog’.
He presses the reset button and entirely destroys the castle of Princess Peach. Now, our hero Mario must be the savior. He needs to re-build the Princess’s castle by accumulating in-game coins. But, this is not that easy. Mario has to finish over 100 levels aka jobs to earn the required coins.
And, each of these levels has distinct flavors. They are full of surprises and twists. So, you won’t be bored to play them continuously. Some levels are harder while others are easy as pie. Some levels will have clear conditions — goals that you must achieve prior to complete the level. And, all of these clear conditions are engaging and intuitive as well. So, even if you are a beginner, you will get the hang of it after a couple of tries.
- Create your levels or play others:
Similar to the Story Mode, the Creative Mode also packs a punch. If you want to put you on the shoes of the game designers, then Super Mario Maker 2 has a lot to offer. In this game, you can create your own levels. You can do that either in offline or online.
There are no limitations to designing your own level. This game mode has come with a heap of new features and tools to tinker with. And, the best part is that it is as intuitive as it is challenging. However, there are a couple of things you need to be aware of beware you go in full swing with the creative mode.
First, you can create your own levels and share them with other players all around the world. However, you will have to complete your own level at first before you can upload it. And, speaking of uploading a level online, you need to have the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Without the online membership, you won’t be able to enjoy any online related features or game modes of this game. Yes, even if you want to play levels created by other players. We know, that’s a bummer!
- Other Game Modes:
There are multiplayer game modes of Super Mario Maker 2 as well. You can play both local and online multiplayer. In the local ones, you can play against or with your friends and family members. While on the online multiplayer mode, you will be matched up with random gamers from all around the world.
There are two types of online multiplayer mode such as Co-Op and versus. In the Co-Op mode, you will be matched up with another 3 players on a random course. And, your main goal would be to finish the race. Even if one of you can do that, all of you will win. And in the ‘Versus’ mode, you will play against other 3 players in a do or die race. In this case, only one winner will emerge.
There is also an ‘Endless Challenge’ version. In this mode, you will play against other players all around the world. And, you will be able to play levels after levels until you get a game over. Hence, the name ‘Endless Challenge’. Also, your score will be added to the world leaderboard.
Controls and Other features:
Yes, you can play this game with controllers. However, we have seen that it is best to use the touchscreen. And, a stylus could improve the gaming experience to a greater extent. All the important elements and portions are organized on the edges of the screen.
You can drag and drop the elements you want to use. The most frequently used ones will be stored on the top for easy access. Aside from that, you can also in any item if you want to. Yet, if all these seem cumbersome to you, Nintendo has got your back. They have added a detailed tutorial on the game to walk you through all the ins and outs of the game.
While you can play other players’ levels, you can also leave likes and comments as well. However, there is an option to opt out from receiving comments on your own levels, if you will. You can also customize your profile and character. To do that, you will need to have ‘Maker Points’ which can be earned by receiving likes on your created levels.
Like all the great games, this one also has some faults to point at. First off, the online multiplayer game modes are laggy. Yes, you might get a smooth match from time to time but this is not the case every time.
Also, you can’t play against your friends in this online multiport modes. You will always get matched up against random gamers. However, Nintendo has told us that they will add this anticipated feature in a future update.
So should you buy it?
Yeeees…. Without a shadow of a doubt. If you have a Nintendo Switch, then this is a must-have game. The free version of the game will soon be published, for now, you need to pay a bit for a copy. There is nothing like this game except its predecessor — Super Mario Maker. But, Super Mario Maker 2 is way ahead of that one. In this game, the limit is your imagination. It is fun but challenging at its core.
